Extreme Shortage of Membrane Switches Caused by Coronavirus Outbreak

On Jan. 31, Shanben received a letter of urgent notification from United Imaging, a global leader in advanced medical imaging and radiotherapy equipment. United Imaging asked for an emergent supply of membrane switches for its equipment of CT and DR, which was in urgent need by the frontline of war against Covid-19 in Wuhan.

Mission Impossible Completed by Shanben with Record Lead Time

Still it seemed a mission impossible to Jimmy Lin, the CEO of Shanben, when he recollected the story. The challenge was obviously big. Since the middle of January, as per the Chinese lunar calendar, many manufacturers had started the holiday of Spring Festival and most immigrant workers had gone home for family union, which they would have only a few times a year. Late in the month, the epidemic outbreak had caused a nationwide lockdown, restricting population movement in the whole country including those workers on vocation at hometown.

Quick response was the only decision by Shanben. Right upon the receipt of the notification from United Imaging, an online conference was held among Shanben’s staff across China, discussing the Production Restore Plan, the possible way of mobilizing workers and materials, and the coordination with the local authorities. Meanwhile, Shanben started to apply for a production approval from Shanghai government. Through joint efforts, 22 staff managed to arrive back in Shanghai right the next day, February 1st. Upon the completion of 14-day quarantine period and the pass of strigent health and medical inspection of both personnel and production environment, Shanben successfully restored production on Feb. 14. Seven days later, the first batch of membrane switches were successfully delivered to United Imaging, setting a record of lead time through 20 years of Shanben’s operation. When watching the successful delivery of United Imaging equipment to Wuhan’s hospitals, Shanben staff hailed also for their positive contribution. It has already become one of the most precious moments in both corporate history and staff personal experience of Shanben.
